Background of the study:

Rising temperatures due to climate change are increasingly affecting agricultural productivity in Ekiti West. Elevated temperatures can alter growing seasons, reduce soil moisture, and increase pest infestations, thereby reducing crop yields (Oluwatobi, 2023). Farmers in Ekiti West have observed a decline in productivity and quality of staple crops, resulting in food insecurity and economic stress. The study will examine how temperature fluctuations impact crop physiology and overall agricultural output. Research indicates that even small increases in average temperature can lead to significant yield losses (Oluwatobi, 2023; Balogun, 2024). In addition, rising temperatures affect water availability and soil fertility, compounding the adverse effects on crop production. This investigation will provide a comprehensive evaluation of these impacts and propose adaptation strategies to mitigate the challenges faced by local farmers.

Statement of the problem:

Rising temperatures in Ekiti West are adversely affecting crop yields, thereby threatening food security and the livelihoods of local farmers. The changes in climate conditions have led to reduced productivity, increased pest pressure, and diminished soil quality. This study seeks to quantify these impacts and explore viable adaptation measures (Oluwatobi, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

To assess the impact of rising temperatures on crop yields.

To identify the physiological effects of temperature on crops.

To recommend adaptation strategies for enhancing agricultural productivity.

Research questions:

How do rising temperatures affect crop yields in Ekiti West?

What are the physiological changes in crops due to increased temperatures?

Which adaptation strategies can improve crop resilience to rising temperatures?

Research Hypotheses:

H₀: Rising temperatures do not significantly affect crop yields in Ekiti West.

H₀: There is no significant relationship between temperature increases and crop physiological stress.

H₀: Adaptation strategies will not significantly mitigate the adverse effects of rising temperatures on crop yields.

Significance of the study:

This study is significant as it addresses the pressing issue of climate change impacts on agriculture. Its findings will inform local farmers and policymakers, providing guidance on effective adaptation strategies to sustain agricultural productivity in the face of rising temperatures (Balogun, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study is confined to examining the effects of rising temperatures on crop yields in Ekiti West Local Government Area, without considering other climatic factors or regions.

Definitions of terms:

Rising Temperatures: Increases in average ambient temperatures over time.

Crop Yields: The amount of agricultural output produced per unit area.

Adaptation Strategies: Methods used to adjust agricultural practices in response to climate change.
